About Bucky's Legendary Lighting

Bucky's Legendary Lighting was officially formed in 1990 but the spirit was born long before the paper work of the company was filed. Bucky, the president, also known as Richard Buckmaster, grew up in a small town on the west coast of British Columbia, by the name of Gibsons Landing. Many of you may recognize this as also the home of a television series called the Beachcombers, it was a good natured Canadian show that happened to come on TV just before the NHL hockey games every Sunday night. Growing up in Gibsons offered continuous exposure to the film industry throughout Bucky's childhood. This exposure coupled with fascination naturally led to a career in the movie business. Starting in 1981 at just 17 years of age Bucky went to work straight out of high school in the lighting department for the CBC learning quickly from some of the best mentors the industry could ever have.

Bucky found that in order to continue growing and learning about the art and science of light and photography he would have to move away from the CBC. So in 1984 Bucky moved to Vancouver and joined up with Iatse Local 891, a worldwide motion picture technicians union. Here Bucky found the best of the best, Oscar winning photographers and designers from all over the world. Acting like a sponge Bucky quested to absorb as much information from this incredible talent pool as possible, and twenty five years later he continues to do so.

The twenty first century also brought Bucky a wonderful new family his beautiful wife Patti and three wonderful children Dylan,Ryan, and Deanna, balancing a busy lighting career and a vibrant home life is always a challenge but with the support of an amazing family it all works out terrific.

Being involved in the film industry has allowed Bucky to experience all forms of lighting on productions ranging from almost unlimited to almost no budgets often trying to achieve the same lighting objective. This experience has been invaluable in learning that the same goal can be reached by many different paths and at a vast range of prices. The film industry has also offered Bucky, unlike any other industry, an environment to test and create infinite lighting styles and scenarios with many types of light fixtures from imitation candle light to prototype plasma fixtures, many unavailable to the general public. This experience has been invaluable in being able to apply what is tried and tested in the make believe world of film to the practical environments of the real world. Armed with these experiences Bucky enjoys being able to help people bring a little Hollywood into their lives through lighting. Better lighting means better living. Whether in your home or office, interior or exterior, Bucky always has a tip to help you make your life a little brighter.

Working together with Bucky is an amazingly diverse team starting with Tom Kolafa and Shamus Whiting-Hewlett in charge of operations, Frank Olic supplying all our electrical support, Robyn Hall, and John Williams as the back bone of our team and as rigging and manufacturing the ever diligent Todd Lapp and Neil Wildman. Together we make up the core of a group we like to call the illumilords, a group dedicated to the art and science of light, and helping you find a world of better light.
